Announcing the finalists of The Next Web Paypal X Startup Rally 2010

The Next Web Conference is in two weeks and over a thousand attendees from all over the world that share a passion for the mobile and Internet scene will attend. For 3 days, and right before the famous Dutch national holiday Queensday, Amsterdam is the place to be for people and businesses that shape the future of the web.

Two months ago we got Paypal X on board as the official sponsor of The Next Web Paypal X Startup Rally and off we went. We’ve reviewed 245 startup submissions, we’ve looked at 73 one minute video pitches and finally we selected 45 companies for the interview round. Last week, Zee and I have sat through back to back interviews with each of the semi finalists. The quality of the competing startups has never been this high (this is the fifth year we’ve run the startup rally) and the final selection was difficult.

“We are excited by the list of great finalists, look forward to meeting them in person and helping make their innovations financially successful” Amina Belghiti, EU Platform & New Ventures at PayPal

During the conference 25 companies will get the chance to show their company on the main stage to a worldwide audience consisting of the Jury of Experts, industry journalists, VC’s (amongst others our VC partners Fidelity Growth Partners and Acton Capital), bloggers, potential users, potential exit partners and the thousands of people that watch the on demand videos afterwards. You can imagine that this is an important moment for the selected startups.

In the previous editions we’ve had many great startups that presented at The Next Web Startup Rally, like Netvibes, Zyb, Plazes, Netlog, Widsets, eBuddy, Wakoopa, Mendeley, Huddle, CoTweet, Yunoo and last years winner My Name is E.

All finalists will launch a new service or announce new a major update at The Next Web Conference. There is room for 2 more startups on stage. The attendees of The Next Web Conference will select one startup per day from the other startups that are present with a small booth in the Startup Arena.

I can’t begin to explain how much I’m looking forward to the conference, it’s going to rock!

So with pride, I present the first 23 finalists of The Next Web Paypal X Startup Rally (in no particular order):

About Emi Gal, owner and CEO at Brainient.
This guy was sued for not paying bills and salaries.
His company from Romania, Brainient Media SRL is bankrupt.
He abandoned that company and started Brainient Ltd in London.
    Be aware of this “entrepreneur”.

Wow! Talk about blantant nepotism.Twittercounter and PressDoc are owned by the talking head that founded The Next Web (Boris and Arjen co-founded Twittercounter and Boris founded PressDoc) Probably should have been disqualified from being finalists because of that fact alone – but I guess some people don't have a sense of right or wrong. Not very cool. #fail

Good luck to all the other start ups that made it in on their own merit and technology!

@Andrei (or should I say Cristi) – you should move on man, it's been about a year and a half since you got fired, and spreading gossip about Brainient won't make us hire you again. Oh, and it won't make our clients or investors trust us less either, because we deliver and that's what they care about ;) .

    Cheers!

Emi Gal doesn't deny what I said about the Brainient Media SRL bankruptcy.
Because it's true and it's public information.
You can check on the Bucharest Tribunal's website about that.

The guy he speaks of is most likely the one who sued him.
It happens when the employer doesn't pay your salary and forges documents saying he really paid you.

Cristi, you sued Brainient Media, an outsourcing company that was going bust anyway, claiming you didn't get your salary for the last month with the company. You weren't able to prove anything, 'cause it wasn't true, and that's that. Deal with it.

We're massively getting offtopic, so if anyone wants to find out more about this story feel free to email me at emi@brainient.com. I'm off here.

    Cheers!

Emi Gal is getting desperate here.
I guess he didn't know you can check on the Tribunal's website what is going on.
    http://www.tmb.ro/dosare_ecris.php
    We have two lawsuits here:
    - An ISP sued Brainient for not paying the bills.
That company won and Brainient was declared bankrupt.
    - An employee, this guy Cristi, sued also.
The lawsuit has just begun so the past tense in “weren't able to prove” makes Emi Gal a little liar.

One thing I notice is that Brainient was declared bankrupt after it won the Seedcamp competition and 50000 euros. Basically he left one company bankrupt and started a new one with Seedcamp's money. It says fraud all over it.

Congratulations Patrick on choosing the 23 finalists.
    Especially on Pressdoc & Twittercounter ! :) ) I think they've got a great chance to win! :)

    I've got 2 Qs:
    - How were all startups rated & judged ? What point system ?
    - Will semifinalist startups get feedback ?

I'm sure you will be doing a great service to all startups by doing so.
    Good luck with TNW !

    Facts:
March 2009 – Brainient is sued for not paying bills
September 2009 – Brainient wins Seedcamp and 50000 euro
October 2009 – Brainient Ltd is registered in London, UK
November 2009 – the old Brainient is declared bankrupt

Emi Gal is obviously obsessed with his former employee.
    I suggest psychological counseling.

I think they prefer to keep that a mystery in the hope they can do what they want, when they want. :) Would be interesting to see how they scored it and see how each TNW investor/founder scored their own investment. Baby steps I guess. :)
