Samsung’s Galaxy S series passes 100m global channel sales, as the Galaxy S3 tops 41m

Samsung’s Galaxy S series passes 100m global channel sales, as the Galaxy S3 tops 41m

Samsung is celebrating a significant milestone today after its Galaxy S range of smartphones passed 100 million channel sales worldwide. That landmark has been reached thanks in no small measure to the Galaxy S3 — its latest flagship smartphone — which has reached 41 million channel sales, after selling 11 million units over the past two months.

Update: A press release from Samsung confirms the milestone but provides no additional details.

The handset maker disclosed the new numbers via a series of images on its Flickr account, but there’s not yet been a public announcement, barring what accompanies the image (below). A short article from Korean news wire The Yonhap provides a more updated number on the Galaxy S3 sales figures, which passed 40 million recently.

Samsung Electronics’ flagship Galaxy S series surpassed the accumulated sales record of 100 million units from the supply side in only 2 years and 7 months after its launch in May 2010. Galaxy S III is selling at much faster rate of 30 million in 5 months and 40 million in 7 months, after becoming a million seller in only 50 days after its release last May. Currently, its average daily sales are 190,000 units. The driving force behind Samsung Electronics’ rise to the top on the global smartphone market is Galaxy S II which is gaining ground as a steady seller hitting the sales of over 40 million in only 20 months.

This is the first set of sales numbers that Samsung has released in 2013. The company’s most recently disclosure came on November 5 when it confirmed that the Galaxy S III had reached 30 million channel sales — that’s ‘sales’ to retailers not end users — and it shows continued momentum for the phone.

The original Galaxy S hit the market two years and nine months ago and, today, lower priced devices are a huge part of the company’s success. Phones like the recently launched Galaxy S II Plus help it reach consumers that are shopping with a more modest budget.

Samsung is tipped to launch its next Galaxy S device in the coming months, rumors of the device began surfacing in Korea following the launch of the iPhone 5, although the company later distanced itself from the reports. We can also expect to see the company release Tizen-based phones this year after Samsung confirmed that devices build on the open source system will hit the market in 2013.
