Spotify is making 12 original video shows to take on YouTube Red

Spotify is making a big push into video by producing its first ever lineup of original shows. While the company recently started showcasing video from around the Web, this will be first time the company produces original media.

There will be 12 shows to start, but don’t expect full-fledged Netfix-style content. Instead, Spotify seems to be taking an approach closer to original content on YouTube Red, with the longest episodes running at around 15 minutes.

Fittingly enough, the content centers around music. One show called ‘Landmark’ is documentary series on different important moments in music history, ‘Drawn & Recorded’ is an animated series focusing on different classic artists, while in ‘Rush Hour’ Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker a pair of hip-hop acts are paired to collaborate on a live music piece.

Spotify first revealed its intention to get into the video game back in May of 2015, and expanded the feature on iOS and Android a few months ago. It’ll be an uphill battle to steal views away from the likes of YouTube, but the music niche could help build a following.
