Oyster ‘Netflix for books’ app opens an e-book store, widening its platform to non-subscribers

Book subscription app Oyster today announced that it is launching an e-book store, going against the likes of Barnes & Noble, Amazon, Apple and Google.

The Oyster e-book store means that you no longer have to subscribe to the service’s $9.99 monthly fee for access to e-books across the Web. Some of the partner publishers include Hachette, HarperCollins, Macmillan, Penguin Random House and Simon & Schuster.

While it’s probably more economical to subscribe if you love to explore different titles, the store does give readers an alternative e-reader app that’s beautifully designed for your mobile device.

The e-book market is starting to get pretty saturated, so choosing one app or device over the other will depend mostly on your visual and reading preferences. For example, Oyster might be great for someone who loves reading new releases, but the Kindle Store might still be your go-to for interactive books (Choose Your Own Adventure, Mad-Lib) or self-published titles.

The Oyster app is available for free on iOSAndroid and Kindle Fire.
