Stripe launches in the UK, and brings support for other currencies along with it

Online payment processor Stripe has started its expansion into Europe today, beginning with the UK. To mark the occasion, it’s also rolling out support for multiple currencies.

Starting today, UK merchants, developers, retailers and anyone else can sign up to start accepting card payments using Stripe’s service, with payments for UK users able to be charged in US Dollars, Great British Pounds or Euros.

In the UK, it will cost 2.4 percent plus £0.20 per transaction (+ VAT) to accept payments from most major card types, including Visa, Mastercard and American Express.

The move will expand the company’s operations from being squarely focused on the US market and act as a gateway for launches into other parts of Europe and later, Australia.

It follows a beta trial of the service in the UK which launched in March this year and attracted interest from the likes of Virgin Pure.
