Spotify’s updated Android app hits Google Play, with Ice Cream Sandwich support and Last.fm scrobbling

Spotify’s updated Android app hits Google Play, with Ice Cream Sandwich support and Last.fm scrobbling

Almost two months after we reported on Spotify’s brand spanking new Android app, today sees its full public launch having been in preview mode since April.

The app has undergone a top-to-bottom redesign, and now includes full support for Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich), playlist folder support, a widget to control the app from the main homescreen and Last.fm scrobbling.

“For all our Android users, this Spotify update is a huge leap forward,” says Gustav Södertröm, VP Products at Spotify. “We’ve rebuilt it from top to bottom, making it faster, slicker and much better looking. The feedback we got from the preview we released a few weeks back was really positive. We wanted to give our users something special – we really hope you like it.”

In addition, cover art and artist imagery have been given lick of paint too, and will now be displayed in high resolution. Whilst related artist view is available for the first time on mobile, and play queue and friends’ profile pages/playlists can now be accessed too.

In the intermittent period between the preview and public phases of Spotify’s latest Android incarnation, it finally arrived on iPad last month, ending what seemed like an eternal wait for the music streaming service to land on Apple’s market-dominating tablet device.

The new Android app has been pushed out from Spotify’s end, and should be going live on Google Play in your region at some point today.
