Adobe’s Photoshop Express didn’t fare too well in our recent round-up of iOS image enhancement apps. There are simply better options out there. Now Adobe has made a push to make it a little more desirable with an update that adds what appears to be the first of a series of plug-ins which will be available as in-app purchases.
The ‘Camera Pack’ offers the ability to smooth out grain, speckling and other noise. This noise reduction filter does a great job at smoothing out grainy images. It can also create a rather pleasant ‘airbrushed’ look to some images if you overdo it. The plugin also enables the ability to set timers to control when photos are taken and lets you set an automatic review period for the photo you’ve just taken.
Is the Camera Pack worth £2.39 (or local equivalent price)? That’s completely up to you and how much you value image editing, although it should be noted that Camera+ is still a better all-round camera and image enhancement combination. Given that the Camera Pack is available in a new ‘Purchases’ folder on the app, it’s safe to assume that Adobe plans further paid-for add-ons in future, providing Adobe with a revenue stream for this free app.
The revised app also features a revised camera workflow for faster image capture (although the iPad 2 is not yet supported) and support for the iPhone 4’s Retina display.
The update is free to download and available in the App Store now.
