An App Store issue is crashing a number of newly updated Mac and iOS apps

An issue within Apple’s App Store is causing a number of newly updated iOS and Mac apps to experience serious issues, with users reportedly unable to run the freshly updated apps which crash upon being loaded.

The issue was highlighted by Marco Arment, the creator of Instapaper, who saw a new version of popular bookmarking app go live in the App Store on Tuesday, only to be “deluged by support email and Twitter messages from customers” who found that the it would not load.

In spite of the fact that Apple had approved the update and published the latest version in the App Store, Arment says the issue affected users in the US, the UK and other markets; though, notably, those Australia weren’t affected, suggesting it isn’t a fully worldwide issue.

Instapaper’s issue was fixed when Arment reached out to Apple with details of the problem, but the Cupertino-based firm provided no feedback to him and is yet to comment or acknowledge any issue publicly.

The problems have affected a number of apps that have released new versions in the last 24 hours or so – our full and updated list is at the bottom of this post.

One affected app, Goodreader, has suggested that those that download the latest version of the app are unaffected by the issue, and the company has provided step-by-step instructions to overcome the problem.

We’ve found that a number of other newly update apps work fine, despite the crash issues that these apps are facing.

With Rovio’s Angry Birds series now affected — via the free app — the issue could well gain significant visibility among Apple customers, albeit that many are likely to be unaware that issue is on Apple’s side.

We’ve reached out to Apple for clarification.

For a full-recap of the problem, be sure to read Arment’s blog post, which includes his suggestion that issue was caused by Apple submitting corrupt binaries of the apps.
