Update: Apple has silently moved the system status back to normal, saying that all services are online.
We started seeing mentions a couple of hours ago on Twitter, and we’ve been monitoring them ever since. As time has passed, the rumbles of people having problems with Apple’s iCloud service have gotten more frequent.
It seems that Apple is aware of the situation, and is working on a fix. According to the Apple Support page for iCloud, here’s the dish –
“Users may be unable to access iCloud services. Normal service will be restored ASAP.”
As for the nature of the problems, there’s a good chance that you’re not able to log in to the iCloud.com site, you may be seeing password error messages on your iPhone and chances are that any third-party apps that access iCloud (such as the amazing Fantastical) are popping up error messages for you, too.
For now, it’s wait and see time. Unfortunately it seems that the outage is spreading, given the reports that we’re seeing. In the mean time, make sure you do a local backup and then upgrade to iOS 5.0.1 so you’ll be ready to roll when iCloud stops choking.
Or on the other hand, maybe it’s not such a bad deal after all…
