Unreal: The new Avengers movie features shots taken with an iPhone

This is getting a tad crazy. We knew that the iPhone’s camera was getting really good, but having the video shot with it featured in a huge blockbuster like The Avengers is something else.

According to TiPB’s Rene Ritchie, Seamus McGarvey, the cinematographer of the new Avengers movie, used the iPhone 4 to shoot some footage for the movie and it stayed in the final cut:

The beauty of photography or cinema is that you make every choice based on the content at hand. On The Avengers, I did a couple of shots on the iPhone and they are in the movie. In fact, they are in the trailer! I understand that sometimes there is no choice and you have to go for the cheapest option, but if you are limited for choice, you can still make poignant decisions that will effect the look of the film

The iPhone 4, and now the iPhone 4S, both have fantastic cameras that compare well against any other phone out there, and even some much more expensive cameras. I can speak from personal experience when I tell you that in the end, it is largely the photographer and not he camera that makes the shot, so I don’t doubt that a talented cinematographer could put the iPhone to use in certain cases.

The movie, directed by Joss Wehedon and starring Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Chris Evan’s Captain America and Scarlett Johanssen’s Black Widow comes out in May of 2012.
