You can now watch the BBC’s live Euro 2012 coverage on the mobile Web, on 3G or WiFi

“During this first full week of Euro 2012 games, we’ve been testing some exciting new ways to enjoy the football, which I’m delighted to unveil to you all today,” writes Lucie Mclean, Senior Product Manager at BBC Future Media, who’s responsible for BBC Sport services on mobile devices.

Just in time for England’s vital second game of the tournament against Sweden tomorrow, the BBC has now made it possible to watch all its allocation of Euro 2012 matches directly on the mobile Web, in addition to all the highlights from all the other games. Crucially, it will work across both 3G and WiFi.

The action can be accessed through the existing BBC Sport website on your mobile device, or via its new mobile-optimised sport homepage. The video will work across all iOS devices running 5.0 and above, and on Android devices with OS 2.2 and over.

“Audience research shows that users are increasingly looking to the Web on the go, getting the content they want when, and where, they want it,” writes McLean. “Huge numbers of people already enjoy live and demand video on their desktop, at home or office, and text and data services on their mobile. By offering video across mobile devices we aim to give sport fans the complete picture wherever they are.”

The Sport homepage has been redesigned for mobile devices, in part to showcase the new video, but also to bring it into line with the BBC Sport website which was re-launched in February with a focus on live coverage.

Last month we brought you the BBC’s plans for the “first digital Olympics”, but before that even kicks off the BBC is already ramping up its live sports coverage. A dedicated BBC Sports mobile app will also launch shortly, similar to its existing News app.

It’s also worth noting that for the live broadcasts, you can already access the Euro games via iPlayer over a WiFi connection, but this move opens up access to those who happen to just visit the Sports website, whilst it also makes the full highlights from the other games available on the move too. And the fact that it’s viewable over 3G and not just WiFi is noteworthy too.
