Windows 10’s July 29 release date may be fast approaching, but that doesn’t mean Microsoft isn’t still packing on new features onto its newest Windows 10 builds. Today’s Build 10158 brings numerous new features as the OS is prepared for its final release.
First off, Project Spartan is finally called Microsoft Edge in this build. It’s not just a name change either; there are several notable updates over previous Spartan builds:
- You can add a ‘Home’ button to the browser via the Advanced Settings menu
- Bookmark importing from other browsers is now supported
- There’s a cool new dark theme
- You can choose to open the browser with a Start page, the New Tab page, previous pages or a specific set of pages
- New Tab pages can feature either top sites or suggested content
- There’s a password manager on board
- Tabs can be dragged and dropped to new windows
One important note: Edge will completely replace Spartan, so you’ll have to back up your favorites before updating to Build 10158 if you want to save them (which you can do via the instructions on the Windows blog).
With every new build of Window 10 Microsoft has been refining its interface; this time around it’s cleaned up some UI glitches and Tablet mode animations, as well as improved support for legacy apps in Tablet mode. Swiping up from the left side of the Start menu will now show all of your installed apps.
Cortana meanwhile is getting some of the updates recently brought to Windows 10 Mobile, including tracking your flights and packages, and alerts for your commutes to home, work and the airport. You an also now send emails straight from Cortana by dictating the email address, the subject and the message. Cortana even lets you correct the text with just your voice.
Other updates include GIF support for the Photos app, a timer on the Snipping Tool and battery fixes for the Surface Pro 3. For more on this build and what’s coming, check out Microsoft’s Blog post linked below.
