Yahoo is ready with a final version of its revamped email service in an attempt to make it more appealing to people who are shifting to social networking sites as their primary means of communication.
Users of Yahoo’s free email service will be switched to the new version during the next few weeks.
Aside from the overhauled user interface and speed improvements, the company is adding new features that tightly knit a user’s social networking account into their Yahoo Mail. Users can now use Facebook Messaging and check Twitter updates directly from within an e-mail. It also integrates instant messaging and text messages seamlessly, archiving conversations by default. It is also capable of sending attachments of up to 100 megabytes via YouSendIt.
Despite remaining the top e-mail provider in the U.S. with 277 million accounts, the company has been losing ground in recent years, dropping 1 percent globally over the last 12 months, according to ComScore.
“Yahoo’s vision for online communications brings together all the tools that people use to connect–email, chat, SMS, and social updates–and makes it easier for them to share content and engage in conversations with the people that matter most to them,” Yahoo Chief Product Officer Blake Irving said in a statement.
