VOD service Claro Video is coming to Mexico and other countries, FayerWayer reports. The announcement was made by America Movil’s mobile arm Telcel during the presentation of its 4G/LTE network plans in Mexico.
“We will have [Claro Video] in all other countries [where we operate],” said Telcel’s director of Added Value Services and International Roaming, Marco Quatorze. According to FayerWayer, it should cover all of Latin America by the end of 2013.
As you may remember, it was recently announced that the film and TV service would fully launch in Brazil during 2013’s first quarter. In addition, it already operates in beta in Colombia and Argentina.
The more Latin American countries it serves, the more it will become a serious competitor for Netflix. As a matter of fact, Claro Video’s model combines individual transactions with subscription plans, which will help it get access to new releases, a challenge for Netflix.
In Mexico, it will also compete against other over-the-top offerings, such as Walmart-owned movie streaming service Vudu and Grupo Salinas’ platform Totalmovie (see our post about OTT in Latin America).
