Verizon simplifies its data plans and eliminates device subsidies for new subscribers

Verizon has followed T-Mobile’s lead, and is ending phone subsidies and contracts for new customers. Starting August 13, subscribers can choose how much data they want, and pay a flat monthly fee to connect devices.

Data plans now come in four sizes:

Small — 1GB of data for $30 per month

Medium — 3GB of data for $45 per month

Large —  6GB of data for $60 per month

Extra Large — 12GB of data for $80 per month

All data is shared. If you want to add a mobile hotspot or tablet to your plan, it’s $10 per month. All “connected devices” like smartwatches are $5 per month. Connecting a smartphone will run you $20 per device.

Re/Code is reporting that customers who exceed the allotted plan data will be charged $15 per gigabyte.

Those who want to purchase a new phone can pay it off monthly using Verizon’s device payment option, or pay the full retail price upfront. Verizon also says current subscribers can switch to the new plans August 13 “with some restrictions.”
