Uber launches new fare splitting feature, making it easy for groups to split the cost of trips

Uber has just launched a new feature which lets users split the cost of a trip when riding together in the same car.

The fare splitting feature is now live for users on iOS and can be downloaded here. The New York Times states that the same feature will make its way to Google Play, but the Android update has yet to go live.

According to Uber, you can now split fares by inviting “friends directly from your contact list or enter their mobile numbers manually at any point during your trip.” Once your friend confirms they’d like to split the cost of the ride, Uber automatically divides the cost by however many riders are present.

This update is a natural move on Uber’s part, as letting riders split their fares could cut down on the perceived cost of the service — at least for those of us in NY, a $15 ride for five people isn’t bad when a subway trip would amount to $12.50.
