Good news (maybe), developers — Twitter wants you back. At the Fortune Brainstorm Tech conference in Aspen, Colorado, Twitter co-founder Ev Williams said it was time Twitter re-engage with software developers.
“Twitter should be more of a platform than it is,” said Williams, who also said deprecating developer access to its API so many years ago was the right thing to do because it “wasn’t a win/win” for users or developers.
Williams also hinted at new platforms developers may be able to tap into. “There are a lot of things going on. New products, new source of revenue.”
Twitter has a lot going for it, too. Periscope is a fun new medium for users, and its Fabric suite of tools have brought many developers back into the fold in a small way.
Still, this is a company that basically told developers to shove off so many years ago, and remains a thorn in the side of popular apps like Falcon Pro with its token limits. They may want developers back, but Twitter will have to do an about-face before many (read: most) developers give them a chance.
