Twitch, the live streaming platform that has cultivated a community around video games, also devotes a large part of its mission to charities. And this year is no exception, as the company announced today that its users raised $17.4 million in charitable donations to 55 different organizations in 2015.
While some users have small fundraisers or continue charitable donations throughout the year, Twitch says that $13 million of funds raised came from the doings of five major events:
- Extra Life: $7 million-plus for Children’s Miracle Network
- Games Done Quick: $2.8 million-plus for the Prevent Cancer Foundation and Doctors Without Borders
- Gaming for Good: $1.3 million-plus for Save the Children
- Yogscast Jingle Jam 2015: estimated $1 million-plus for 7 different charities (still ongoing)
- St. Jude Play Live: $950,000+ for St. Jude
The number of charitable donations made through Twitch has skyrocketed over the last few years. In 2014, the platform raised more than $10.5 million for charity. That number was more than the last three years combined: from 2011 to 2013, Twitch raised $8 million total.
As long as Twitch continues to prioritize charity in its community, the likelihood of that number continuing to rise is rather good.
