Tumblr is hosting an art exhibition to celebrate the magic of GIFs

Massive social blogging site Tumblr is known to many as the birthplace of the modern GIF. Of course, I’m not talking about those annoying, flashy animations all over GeoCities, or even looping images of cute kittens. I’m referring to the image format’s transformation into an emerging art form.

Now, to celebrate the magic of these beloved, often obnoxious animations, Tumblr is teaming up with Paddle8 to host the first ever large-scale, open call for original animated GIFs. That open call will conclude with a physical art exhibition of selected GIFs during this December’s Art Basel in Miami Beach.

If you’re interest is piqued, check out the exhibition page, then submit your own GIFs here. By the way, I am pronouncing GIF with a hard G and there’s nothing you can do to stop me.
