First launched in beta a little under six months ago, Trunx is entering an already saturated space – there’s already Dropbox’s Carousel and others like Bitcasa which offer similar cloud-oriented functionality, among many more – but the company is hoping to make a splash in the market by offering completely unlimited free storage for your images and videos, at least initially.
In essence, the app wants to be your one-stop-shop for anything photography-related on your phone – which means it includes tools within the app for taking pictures and capturing video directly. And if you do use the in-app snapper, the photos or videos that you capture will be stored directly in the cloud, rather than on your device, thereby keeping your on board storage relatively free.
Among other notable features, Trunx allows users to create shared collaborative photo albums using a feature called SharedPix (shown above). To keep everything organized, photos can be arranged by date, time and tags. There’s also an option called EchoPix, which allows you to add audio recordings to pictures.
Completing the wrap of essential features for any self-respecting photo sharing app, there’s also Dropbox, Facebook and Instagram integration on board, so retrieving and sharing your photos should be pretty easy too. The company said it plans to add support for other cloud-sharing platforms in the future.
As with any promise of ‘unlimited’ anything, we were a little suspicious. As it turns out, the unlimited free storage offer is running from now through Q4, according to a spokesperson, but if you sign up between now and then, you’ll get unlimited storage for life.
Whether or not this will be enough to tempt people into trying yet another photo sharing and storage app remains to be seen, but the company has already had some early traction – such as being named the official photo app of Macworld/iWorld this year – so it’s clearly doing something right.
