The New York Times relaunches its Windows Phone app, designed with latest handsets in mind

The New York Times has emerged as something of a poster child for the digital news industry, and its attention to detail across platforms has seen both its print AND digital editions flourish.

With iPad, iPhone/iTouch, Android and BlackBerry apps, it’s got most bases covered. And with that in mind, The New York Times is today rolling out a redesign of its Windows Phone news app, which has been overhauled and optimized for the latest Windows mobile devices.

The redesigned app follows on the heels of the launch of the Nokia Lumia 900, back in April. “We want to give our readers easy access to our content regardless of what platform they prefer,” says Denise Warren, senior vice president and chief advertising officer, The New York Times Media Group, and general manager, NYTimes.com. “Our new and improved Windows Phone app provides an optimal user experience that highlights The Times’s celebrated journalism, photography and multimedia.”

There has been a slew of new updates to the app, including:

  • Live Tile Integration: Pin any of the sections and blogs as Live Tiles to see the latest headlines at a glance
  • Pivot Navigation: View articles, videos and blogs in each section
  • Cloud Integration: Save articles to the cloud for access from multiple devices
  • Updated and refreshed design
  • Improved performance and fast app switching

As with the previous incarnation of the app, the latest Windows Phone version features more than 25 sections of New York Times news, information and opinion, including videos, slide shows and blogs. It also has an offline feature and a full set of share options on articles, videos and slide shows across social media and e-mail.

As with other New York Times news apps, the Top News section of the app is free – however, to access all sections of the app, a digital subscription is required.

The new app will available for download later today from the Windows Phone Marketplace.
