The HTC Butterfly 2 is a 5-inch smartphone that goes on sale in Asia next month

HTC has announced the Butterfly 2, a new 5-inch smartphone in its Butterfly range that will go on sale across Asia from next month.

Powered by a 2.5 GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 processor, the device sports a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera. There’s also a five-megapixel front-facing camera which HTC says will let users take “beautiful selfies with ease.”

There’s plenty of focus on audio, as we’ve come to expect from HTC. The Butterfly 2 comes with the company’s BoomSound technology — in fact, HTC says the phone’s sound system is 25 percent louder than the HTC One thanks to a revamped speaker layout.

The Butterfly 2 is water resistent, however the body is plastic. That might make it less appealing for some than the metallic One M8, which is HTC’s flagship smartphone, but it is almost certain to be a lot more affordable.

The device is going on sale in Japan first, where it will be offer by KDDI as the HTC J butterfly HTL23. It’s scheduled to go on sale in Taiwan on September 2, and from there it will make its way to Hong Kong, India, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand among other countries. It’s unlikely to get released in the US.

There’s no word on price yet, but we expect that it will be a mid-range affair just like others in the Butterfly range.

HTC got in touch to let us know that the Butterfly 2 is “not a mid-range device but it is a flagship product.” That sets that straight, our apologies for any confusion.
