The 16GB Nexus 7 goes on sale in India for $370

The 16GB Nexus 7 goes on sale in India for $370

The original Nexus 7 tablet, designed and developed by Google in collaboration with Asus, will be going on sale later today in India.

Clinton Jeff, Founder and Senior Writer at unleashthephones.com, tweeted the announcement earlier today after speaking with Value 360 Communications, a PR agency representing Asus in India.

The same spokesperson told TNW however that the Nexus 7 will in fact be going on sale later today. It is understood to be the orginal 16GB version, and retail at Rs 19,990.

To add further confusion though, Alex Huang, managing director of system business group at ASUS India, has been quoted in The Times of India today confirming that the device will launch tomorrow as previously suggested: “We will start selling Nexus 7 in Indian stores from tomorrow,” Huang reportedly told the newspaper.

It’s also worth noting that the Rs 19,990 price tag ($370) is a great deal higher than what the device is being sold for in the United States ($199).

Regardless of whether the tablet launches today or tomorrow though, it will corroborate the announcement made by Asus India themselves at a press conference held in September.

The release follows similar launches in other regions around the world, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany and Spain, among others.

The Nexus 7 release in India isn’t to be confused with the new 32GB version unveiled by Google last week though, which also has HSPA+ mobile data.

When asked, the spokesperson for Value 360 Communications could not confirm whether the new versions of the tablet would also be available today or in the near future.

The Nexus 7 is undoubtely the flaghsip device for Android on tablets, running version 4.1 of the Google-owned operating system, known as Jelly Bean, through a Tegra 3 quad-core processor and a 1200×800 display.
