That Steve Jobs Email Transcript with the Furious iPhone Customer? FAKE.

Boy Genius Report “exclusively” reported a conversation between Steve Jobs and a furious iPhone customer earlier today. The transcript of the conversation was picked up by a number of sites including ourselves – ignorantly trusting BGR and its sources – and for that we apologise. Won’t happen again.

Philip Elmer-DeWitt at Fortune was able to hear back from Apple PR who confirmed the entire conversation was fabricated.

Elmer-DeWitt says,

[I] Asked Apple PR on the record whether Steve Jobs was the author of any or all of these statements, a top Apple spokesman emphatically denied it.

What’s worse, the same spokesman highlighted the fact that AppleInsider reports that the identical exchange was handed to them (for a price) and the blog, we can only assume, refused to pay.

The man involved is reportedly based in Virginia.

More to follow as and when we hear it.
