Tesla will stop making most Cybertrucks at its Texas factory around the middle of next year, chief executive Elon Musk said on Friday. The space will instead be used to build more Cybercabs, the company’s two-seat robotaxis.

Musk announced the plan in a post on X, but he did not say whether production would end completely.

Gigafactory Texas is the only plant that builds the Cybertruck. Tesla has not said what will happen to parts and servicing for existing owners. The truck has sold far below Tesla’s early hopes.

In 2023, Musk said Tesla could eventually sell 250,000 to 500,000 a year. However, the company has sold only tens of thousands in total since deliveries began in late 2023.

Tesla does not report Cybertruck sales on their own. Instead, it groups them with the Model S, Model X, and Semi, and that category fell 48% from a year earlier to 8,295 vehicles in the third quarter.

Based on those figures, Electrek estimates Tesla has delivered about 70,000 Cybertrucks in three years. The truck also missed the goals Tesla set when it was unveiled in 2019.

Also, the company promised a price under $40,000 and a range of up to 500 miles, but the truck arrived two years late, at about $60,000 and with a shorter range. Today the cheapest version starts at $74,990, after a $5,000 price rise in August.

Its divisive design and high price weighed on sales. Musk’s political activity in 2024 and 2025 also made the truck a target for protests, TechCrunch reported.

The Cybertruck is the latest product Tesla has dropped as it puts more money into AI and robotics. Earlier this year, it ended production of the Model S and Model X and used that space to build Optimus humanoid robots.

Meanwhile, Cybercab has been carrying passengers in Austin for about two months. Tesla plans to expand the service to Dallas later this month.
