T-Mobile is expanding coverage for Simple Choice plan users to Mexico and Canada. Starting July 15, T-Mobile will offer free roaming and LTE data for prepaid and postpaid customers who travel to those countries.
You could already use your T-Mobile devices in those countries, but the reduction in data transfer speeds makes it nearly useless. In a call with media, T-Mobile CEO John Legere said 50 percent of smartphone owners turned their devices off when they crossed a border into one of those countries.
If you’re wondering how T-Mobile can do this, it’s essentially really strong peering agreements. T-Mobile said it struck deals with top carriers in Canada and Mexico, though didn’t name any specifically.
Additionally, calls to and from Mexico or Canada are included in Simple Choice plans. T-Mobile even published a list of cities in Canada and Mexico where you can expect LTE speeds (30 in Canada, over 100 in Mexico).
T-Mobile also boasts it has added 2.1 million subscribers in Q2 2015, bringing its total to 58.9 million.
