Sony’s new 3D head-mounted visor to bring a 750-inch screen to your living room

Sony’s new 3D head-mounted visor to bring a 750-inch screen to your living room

Sony on Wednesday announced the impending launch of the HMZ-T1, a 3D head-mounted display that puts a 750-inch screen at a virtual distance of about 20 metres from your eye. The product goes on sale in Japan on November 11.

Sony HMZ-T1 3D Head-Mounted Display

The simultaneously funky and oddly futuristic-looking device boasts of some impressive specs, equipped as it will be with individual 0.7-inch hi-def OLED panels (with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels) for each eye, with a viewing angle of 45 degrees and a 5.1-channel surround sound experience delivered over a pair of headphones.

The company says that viewing anything using the device will be akin to sitting in a movie theatre with a 750-inch screen at a distance of about 20 metres from your eye. The individual screens make the device fully 3D capable and the covered design will enable complete privacy for the viewer.

Although it’d probably be too dorky to wear in a public setting, if it delivers on what it promises, we think it could be an excellent replacement for your personal home theatre. Unfortunately, however, Sony has yet to announce the price or release dates for other regions of the world. We’ll keep you updated as we learn more.
