Following in the footsteps of Apple, Samsung might also be ditching the headphone jack on its upcoming Galaxy S8 smartphone.
According to SamMobile, the South Korean manufacturer is prepping the release of its flashy new flagship device – but without the standard audio port. Instead, the headset will feature a USB Type-C port that will allow for charging and listening to music – but not both at the same time.
While it remains unclear how Samsung will fill up the space from the missing headphone jack, SamMobile suggests the company could use it to bump up battery capacity.
The publication further claims that the Galaxy S8 will pack a 2K Super AMOLED panel, which runs contrary to previous reports speculating the device could ship with a 4K display. While the new screen will keep the same resolution, it will abandon the PenTile layout to improve performance and sharpness.
Following the debacle with the exploding Note 7, the South Korean titan needs to make it count with its next major smartphone release. Among other things, the S8 is rumored to feature a revamped AI assistant as well as a pressure-sensitive screen panel – but maybe not a home button.
Although Samsung has refused to confirm any features for its upcoming flagship device, the phone-maker is expected to drop the new Galaxy S8 early next year at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
