Samsung brings Amazon Instant video to its 2012 Smart TVs

Samsung brings Amazon Instant video to its 2012 Smart TVs

Samsung today announced that owners of its 2012 Smart TVs can now download an Amazon Instant app and gain access to the online retailer’s streaming video collection.

TV owners will now be able to watch more than 140,000 movies and TV shows from the service. Amazon Prime members will also have 30,000 titles on Prime Instant, which launched launched last February, available to them on the TV. Customers can purchase, rent, or subscribe to videos directly from their Samsung TV.

The new video app joins preexisting offerings on Samsung’s Smart TVs from rivals Hulu, Netflix, Blockbuster and YouTube.

“Streaming video content has emerged as the killer app for our Smart TV platform. In addition to our current line-up of big brands, Amazon Instant Video has been one of the most commonly requested services from our customers,” said Eric Anderson, Vice President of Content and Product Solutions, Samsung Electronics America. “We are very proud to say that today we deliver on that request – along with a brand new UI available for the first time on Samsung TVs.”

The app is available today from the Samsung Apps store. Previously purchased or rented videos should appear automatically in the software’s video library. The company says the app should work on and 2012 Smart Samsung TV, but it appears earlier models will not be eligible for the service.

In addition to working with Samsung, Amazon Instant has gone big time this year, arriving on the PlayStation 3 in April, the Xbox 360 in May and the iPad in August.
