Runtastic races past 30M app downloads and 25M mobile users as it launches its hardware in the US

Fitness app developer and community Runtastic has announced it has passed 30 million downloads and that it is expanding its own hardware line into the US.

Runtastic’s core is a self-titled running app which competes with services like Runkeeper, but Runtastic is taking a very wide-reaching approach to fitness. The company touts a collection of apps which includes everything from squats to push-ups to winter sports.

Runtastic had just 14 million downloads under its belt as of October 2012, and now the company claims it is averaging one app download per second. In addition, while the company has seen more than 30 million downloads, it currently has 25 million mobile users across all of its apps — that 5 million gap being the number of Runtastic users who are taking advantage of multiple apps.

With this diversity in mind, Runtastic first stepped into hardware in February of last year, targeting Europe with fitness accessories like a heart rate monitor, GPS watch and armband. Now, this line is making its debut in the US.

The community of Runtastic app users is growing as well: it counts 10 million registered users on Runtastic.com, where the company says users are comparing their stats with others and viewing their training log.

Competition in fitness-tech is intense — especially as giants like Nike increasingly gain ground. For now, however, it appears that Runtastic’s multi-app approach is coming in handy as its growth rate continues to accelerate.
