Restaurant guide Zomato boosts global plans with its first-ever acquisition, in talks for two more

India-headquartered restaurant guide Zomato announced today that it has made its first-ever global acquisition after purchasing New Zealand’s restaurant discovery service MenuMania for an undisclosed amount.

MenuMania will be integrated into Zomato over the coming weeks, with Zomato CEO and founder Deepinder Goyal saying that the combined product will be the “largest resource of restaurant information in New Zealand.”

Founded in 2008, Zomato is already India’s largest food and nightlife guide, but it has embarked on an ambitious global rollout throughout 2013 which has seen it enter London and other UK cities, Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia via the Philippines and subsequently Indonesia, and of course also New Zealand.

The company says that the acquisition will help it anchor its presence in the Pacific region. Goyal hinted that there will be more global acquisitions to come as Zomato seeks to be the “dominant player in this space across the globe.” A Zomato spokesperson revealed that the company is already in acquisition talks with two other similar players, one in Southeast Asia and the other in Europe.

Zomato currently sees over 20 million monthly visits globally, across its web and mobile platforms. In April this year, Zomato launched its fully-overhauled web and mobile apps, in a bid to increase user activity and engagement though more social interaction across the platform. One of the key updates was FoodFeed, a list which users can scroll through to see news from those they follow, as well as restaurant reviews, ratings and more.
