Rdio has hired Anthony Bay, formerly the global head of Amazon’s digital video division, as its new chief executive officer. Drew Larner, who previously filled the role, is now vice-chairman for the company and a strategic advisor to the board of directors.
Rdio is a prolific music streaming service, but it’s under an increasing amount of pressure from market competitors such as Spotify, Deezer, Google Play Music All Access and Xbox Music. Rdio founder Janus Friis said Bay, who also worked for Apple and Microsoft earlier in his career, would be responsible for increasing the number of free users and paid-for subscribers.
As GigaOM points out, the statement released today fails to mention Vdio, its digital TV and movie service. Rdio has been fairly quiet about the platform since its launch in April this year. Odd, given Bay’s background in video.
