Google-backed Pixxel raises $100M in India’s largest space tech round

Temasek and London-listed Seraphim Space led the Series C, taking the hyperspectral imaging company’s total raised to $195m.

Pixxel, the Indian company that has spent six years arguing that Earth observation is worth doing in colours the human eye cannot see, has raised $100M in a Series C round led by Singapore’s state investor Temasek and the London-listed Seraphim Space Investment Trust.

It is the largest single round any Indian space technology company has closed, and it takes the total capital behind the business to $195m.

The round brings in two new investors, 360 ONE Asset and the South Korean firm IMM Investment, alongside existing backers Radical Ventures and growX Ventures.

Google, which put money into the company at an earlier stage, is not listed among the participants this time. No valuation was disclosed, which is normal for a private round of this size and is worth noting anyway.

Seraphim’s share of it, at $25m, is the piece that matters to European readers. The trust is one of the few listed vehicles anywhere that gives public-market investors direct exposure to early-stage space companies, and this is a sizeable single allocation from it.

The European Earth observation sector it usually funds is built of much smaller cheques, closer in scale to the €27m Series A raised by the French satellite startup Univity earlier this year.

What Pixxel sells is hyperspectral imagery, which splits reflected light into hundreds of narrow bands rather than the three or four that a conventional imaging satellite captures.

The practical effect is that the pixel stops being a colour and starts being a chemical signature, which is how the same picture can indicate crop disease, a methane leak, mineral content, or water quality.

Six Firefly satellites launched over the past two years are now operating, and the company describes the group as the highest-resolution commercial hyperspectral constellation in orbit.

The money is earmarked for four things: the Honeybee constellation that succeeds Firefly, with a first launch expected in 2027; high-resolution optical satellites and, later, synthetic aperture radar to fill the gaps hyperspectral cannot cover; further work on Aurora, the browser-based analysis platform that sits on top of the imagery; and a manufacturing facility the company calls Gigapixxel.

“Years ago, we set out to build a health monitor for the planet,” founder and chief executive Awais Ahmed said in the funding announcement. “This new investment gives us the scale to turn that vision into planetary infrastructure.”

The customer list is the more persuasive part of the pitch. Pixxel holds contracts with NASA and with the US National Reconnaissance Office, which awarded it a five-year hyperspectral data agreement in 2023.

At home, a Pixxel-led consortium including Dhruva Space, PierSight, and SatSure was selected by IN-SPACe, India’s space regulator, to build a 12-satellite national Earth observation constellation under a public-private structure.

That combination, a commercial constellation, an American intelligence customer, and a sovereign national programme, is the model European operators have been circling for years, and occasionally reaching.

Open Cosmos is building Greece’s first flagship constellation on comparable public-private terms, and a run of smaller companies are chasing the same near-real-time imaging market with far less capital behind them.

India’s regulator has spent the past few years deliberately building rounds like this one. IN-SPACe was created to let private companies own and operate space assets rather than merely supply the state agency, and a national constellation contracted out to a startup-led consortium is close to the purest expression of that policy so far.

A $100m private round landing in the same year is the part the policy could not guarantee.

Honeybee’s first launch is the next thing to watch. Until it flies, the constellation Pixxel is selling to governments is still six satellites and a software platform.
