PayPal gives its Android app a new look, adds payment card scanning and PayPal Here merchant search

PayPal gives its Android app a new look, adds payment card scanning and PayPal Here merchant search

With Square making inroads into the personal payments market, PayPal has almost been matching or attempting to beat it at every turn. Both companies have been signing retail deals left and right, but sensing it needs to keep its finger on the mobile pulse, PayPal has today updated its Android app with a brand new look and a whole host of new features to help users keep on top of their balances, make payments and find local businesses.

In the new app, gone is the familiar white and blue color theme, replaced with a new brown, orange and grey layout that is a lot more welcoming, especially when you load the app and are greeted by its brand new login screen. If you’re familiar with PayPal Here (the company’s Square-like payment reader), you will recognise the look and feel, which has been ported over to its official app.

Once you are logged in, PayPal has updated its interface to provide quick overviews of your total, available and pending balances, also allowing you to scan (well, take a photo) of your payment cards to add and authenticate with your account.

Continuing the PayPal Here integration, app users will now be able to find and learn more about local merchants using the integrated ‘Local’ business search. However, this is only available to US users currently.

PayPal says that it has updated the app to work better with Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich) and has included a number of bug fixes, making it a less painful experience to keep control of your PayPal account.
