Opera’s decision to submit its Opera Mini iPhone application to the Apple App Store looks to have paid dividends with over one million iPhone users downloading the browser on its first day of release.
Opera announced the impressive feat by way of a press release on it’s website highlighting that Opera Mini is currently the number one iPhone application on the 22 featured Apple App Stores as of 8am CET today.
Opera Mini’s remarkable debut has cemented it’s position as the world’s most popular browser, enjoying success on Android, Blackberry and Windows Mobile platforms before it’s release on the Apple iPhone.
“Today iPhone users have a choice, and, as the numbers show, they are eager to explore new and faster ways to surf the Web on the iPhone – especially during heavy Web traffic,” said Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera Software. “With any widely available and frequently downloaded Opera product, we are appreciative of all the feedback we are getting, as it helps us to continually improve our product and better meet the needs of our users.”
Of course the number of downloads doesn’t necessarily equate to the amount of people actually using the browser on a daily basis.
We have downloaded Opera Mini and taken a little time to test it and whilst we definitely appreciate the browsing speed and extra functionality Opera Mini offers, the browsing experience isn’t quite as fluid as Apple’s built in browser, Safari.
