Opera Software, the Norwegian company mostly known for its mobile and desktop browser products, today announced the launch of new cloud technology that helps publishers transform online videos from Dailymotion and other places into apps for connected TVs.

The technology, dubbed TV Snap, is meant to enable said transformation of videos in to ‘smart TV’ apps in 60 seconds or less, at zero cost.

Opera’s first partner is France-based Dailymotion, the world’s second-largest video site with more than 112 million unique visitors and 2.5 billion video views each month.

Opera argues that it is cumbersome and expensive for brands and content owners to develop their own connected TV applications today, even with sizeable video inventories sitting and waiting in the cloud.

With TV Snap, Opera allows content owners to rapidly re-purpose their online video channels and existing video inventory into ready-to-run HTML5 apps for the Opera TV Store, a storefront supported by major television and set-top-box manufacturers like Sony and TCL.

Aneesh Rajaram, SVP for TV & Devices at Opera Software, says:

Video has proven to be the most popular app category for Smart TV audiences, and it’s no wonder, as larger TV screens can bring viewers up close and personal with their favorite online content.

Opera TV Snap will help brands and content owners effortlessly reach new audiences, while bringing a greater choice of popular video to viewers. I can’t wait to watch the latest highlights from my favorite sports teams and music artists directly on my Smart TV.

Opera says each app submission will be moderated to check the validity of content and the app description.
