The past two years have seen an explosion in the ‘quantified self’ market for exercise-focused apps and gadgets, but the same can’t be said for the equally important area of nutrition, which is just as important to our health. The apps are out there, they just don’t seem to have garnered as much attention. Nutrino is a new service launching today that hopes to change that.
Launching right now at The Next Web Conference Europe’s Microsoft Bizspark Startup Rally, Nutrino is described as a ‘virtual personal nutritionist.’ The service, available as an iOS app with an Android version to follow, has been operating in beta in the UK and is now expanding worldwide.
Here’s how it works: you tell the app your exercise level and eating habits and it offers up suitable meals. These meals are added to a shopping list which is particularly useful for users in the UK, where it ties in with the stock offered by supermarket chains Tesco and ASDA. If you’re in a popular chain restaurant or cafe, the app can offer up recommendations tailored to the menu on offer. Pret a Manger, POD, EAT, Costa Coffee and Café Nero are currently supported in the UK. Support for more countries and more outlets will be added over time.
Here’s Nutrino’s promo video:
Nutrino was founded by a team that splits itself between Tel Aviv and London. In a familiar tale, the company’s story begins in the Israeli military. There, co-founders Jonathan Lipnik and Yaron Hadad developed optimisation algorithms for the classification and placement of recruits. Now their model has been adapted to tackle the public’s eating habits.
In addition to an Android app, the roadmap for the future of Nutrino includes an API and support for special dietary requirements. While vegetarians are already catered for, supper for dairy-free, gluten-free, Diabetic, vegan diets and the like are planned.
