Netflix launches on Sony Entertainment Network, initially via 2012 Bravia TVs and Blu-ray models

The day after Netflix announced details of its first quarter’s financials, losing $0.08 per share on $870 million, the video-on-demand (VoD) service has finally arrived on the Sony Entertainment Network in the UK and Ireland.

The Netflix app will be made available on the 2012 Bravia, Blu-ray and Blu-ray Home Theatre models which feature the Sony Entertainment Network.

“Adding Netflix to the Sony Entertainment Network gives consumers an even broader choice of devices to instantly watch unlimited TV programmes and films streamed over the Internet,” said Greg Peters, vice president of product development at Netflix. “We’re always looking to provide people with new ways to enjoy Netflix.”

Netflix was founded in the US in 1997, starting initially as a DVD-rental delivery service before finally morphing into more of a VoD streaming service. Today, it serves the US and Canada, Latin America, the Caribbean, and, as of January this year, the UK and Ireland, where it finally arrived to exchange blows with LoveFilm.

Netflix now sits alongside the likes of YouTube and BBC News on the Sony Entertainment Network, however by only including the app on the 2012 connected devices, this will leave many users out in the cold. A lot of potential customers will still be on 2010 or 2011 TVs and set-top-boxes (STBs).
