Music video site VEVO to launch in Germany without YouTube as its partner

Music video site VEVO, which has been working together with YouTube via a content partnership, will soon be launching in Germany — but without YouTube, the Financial Times reports.

The FT says VEVO will announce on Monday that it has signed a licensing deal with German performance rights organization GEMA, which has been in a long-running dispute with Google’s YouTube over licensing rights. The company did not reveal an exact launch date in Europe’s biggest music market.

Paving its own way in a country marks a first for VEVO, given that the partnership with YouTube has been a path well-trodden. ComScore estimates that VEVO videos accounted for just over 50 million unique views on YouTube in May 2013, the highest rate of any content partner — a report from Nielsen corroborates that.
