Microsoft killed OneDrive’s unlimited cloud storage option in November, and it was very unpopular move. Now it’s trying to make up for it.
To recap, the unlimited storage option was cut to 1 TB in November, but it turns out a lot people actually used over 1 TB of data (read: movies). In some cases that exceed 75 TB, so Microsoft had to make some changes.
Still, unlimited data is supposed to be unlimited right? Needless to say, many OneDrive users were upset, so the company today announced an extended period of time for users still on the unlimited storage plan.
If you used more than 1 TB, you can keep your files on the cloud for up to 12 more months. If you’re still unhappy, Microsoft will offer a ‘full refund.’
Likewise, Microsoft had cut down the free tier from 15 GB to 5GB. Now it’s offering customers who had stored more than 5GB worth of files up to 1 TB of storage via an Office 365 Personal subscription for a year.
Users enrolled in OneDrive’s camera roll bonus will also be able to keep their storage when it’s killed next year by following this link.
It’s definitely not going to appease everyone who was making full use of the storage limits, but should hopefully give them at least some respite as they look for alternative.
