Microsoft has sold over 2 million Xbox One consoles since its launch 18 days ago. The company says that equates to 111,111 units sold on average in its 13 initial launch markets each day. That’s an awful lot of next-gen systems flying off store shelves.

In that relatively short time frame, Xbox One players have already spent over 83 million hours playing the latest games, watching TV, and accessing multimedia apps. Early adopters have also unlocked over 39 million achievements, and ranked up 595 million Gamerscore – the combined tally from individual achievements – with the new console.

Sony, for comparison, revealed on December 3 that it had sold over 2.1 million PlayStation 4 consoles in the 16 days following its launch. It’s difficult to compare the two directly though, given that the systems are available in different markets.

Needless to say, both are proving to be incredibly popular, at least at the outset. Both platforms have their respective fans and after spending roughly seven years with the previous generation of hardware, it’s unsurprising to see a bit of a furore for these next-gen systems.

What will be of interest is the situation six months, or even 12 months down the line. Both gaming console were built to last the next six or seven years, so grabbing a large user base early could dictate its market position for the foreseeable future.
