At its Windows 10 event in New York City today, Microsoft’s Megan Saunders showed off the latest version of its Paint image creation app, and boy, has it come a long way.
In addition to getting a revamped interface, the renamed ‘Paint 3D’ software will now let you create 3D artworks using simple tools and brushes.
It’s also capable of pairing with your phone to scan 3D objects: All you need to do is turn on the camera and capture imagery of the object in the real world from every angle, and it’ll create a full 3D model that you can manipulate and work with.

Paint 3D can also help you isolate objects from photographs, so you can replace the background with another image.
You’ll also find new selection tools, as well as pens and pencils that work on any 3D object, so you can draw on them. Paint 3D also integrates with Remix3D, a community where creators can share their 3D models and find ones to use in their own artwork. These models can also be printed with 3D printers.
With that, Paint 3D is set to take users way beyond creating simple mockups and 2D artwork. It’s available to try now for users in the US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, but you’ll first need to join the Windows Insider program to the Creators Update for Windows 10 and then sign up here to get the new app.
