Amazon-owned LoveFilm has followed up last month’s announcement that it had signed a deal with Warner Bros, by announcing a similar content deal with Sony Pictures Television.
The multi-year content deal will give LoveFilm members exclusive streaming access to new and upcoming Sony Pictures titles during the second subscription pay TV window, as well as catalogue titles and TV series. The deal will kick-in from June 2012.
A few weeks back, we reported that LoveFilm was dropping flash in favor of Microsoft’s Silverlight starting in early January, a move that saw it receive a fair bit of criticism.
LoveFilm’s US rival Netflix has recently announced content deals with Miramax, MGM and Lionsgate in preparation for hitting the UK and Ireland in early 2012.
Back in July, LoveFilm announced it had signed a 5-year content deal with Entertainment One UK (eOne), giving users access to a plethora of independent movies, such as The Twilight Saga. And in September, a deal with StudioCanal was also struck. Getting Sony Pictures on board is a big step forward for LoveFilm as it looks to secure access to more premium content.
LoveFilm members will be able to stream Sony Pictures titles including The Social Network, Salt, and sci-fi action blockbuster 2012 via LoveFilm Instant at no extra cost and as part of their existing subscription.
The deal will also bolster the company’s range of kids TV titles with modern cult animation favorites such as Transformers, Spider-Man and The Karate Kid.
Furthermore, members will gain exclusive streaming access during this pay window to a host of future releases from Sony Pictures including Arthur Christmas.
The deal will see Sony Pictures’ recent and forthcoming releases, catalogue titles and TV series added to the LoveFilm Instant service – available via PCs, Sony Playstation 3, Microsoft Xbox 360, Apple iPad and a growing number of Web-enabled TV sets and Blu-ray players.
