Did you know that oysters grown on the Western Coast of North America generally have a mild flavor with a creamy texture and less salinity than those grown in the Atlantic Ocean?
Now you do. Get facts like this and more from Oysterpedia, an iPhone app for oyster lovers. The app lets you browse oysters, organized by coast with complete descriptions of each oyster’s shape, size and flavor. It lets you save types of oysters to try, rate oysters and share your oyster findings with Facebook and Twitter. It also includes a helpful glossary of descriptor words in case you were wondering what “rack and bag” meant.
Example: Hama Hama oysters from Lilliwaup, Washington have been harvested by the Hama Hama company out of the Hama Hama river since 1922. The river runs through forests in the Olympic Mountains and ends up emptying into the Hood Canal. Due to the geography of the river, the waters stay cold throughout the year giving the oysters a unique and fresh taste that keeps their meat firm well into the warmer months.
The app was made by The Mermaid Inn and The Mermaid Oyster Bar, located in NYC. The restaurant shucks over 300,000 oysters each year and sits over 125,000 diners a year. They created the app to help everyone become an oyster expert. Download the free Lite version here.
This app will be particularly helpful if you’re looking to impress a special somebody this Valentine’s Day!
