LinkedIn adds language support for Traditional Chinese to further its push into China

LinkedIn adds language support for Traditional Chinese to further its push into China

LinkedIn is extending its focus on China after it added Traditional Chinese to the list of languages supported on its service.

The company launched its China-specific site — available at Lingying.com — in February. That initially only covered Simplified Chinese, so the addition of the Traditional Chinese — which is used in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Macau, and by the overseas diaspora — is another step to gaining traction among business professionals in the mainland, particularly those with overseas connections and work.

LinkedIn has five million registered users in mainland China, but its operations there were criticized earlier this month for censoring messages related to the 25th anniversary of the Tiannanmen Square protests. LinkedIn has always maintained that adhering to censorship regulations is a mandatory part of expanding its business to China, but the blocking of content from users in China nonetheless drew criticism from many, as Quartz reports.

Traditional Chinese is also now available on LinkedIn.com, and it takes the number of languages supported on the site to 23.
