Issue v0.10 – WANT: Apps

Issue v0.10 – WANT: Apps

Stocktouch – $1.99 – iPad App

We’re all looking for new ways to visualize data and relate it to our daily lives – at least, the 47% of us are. And the ability to measure, calculate and make recommendations for products depends largely on one thing: statistics. Finally, a brand called VisibleMarket Inc. is catering to consumers and businesses with an app they’ve dubbed StockTouch: it really is that simple. Watch the markets you keep an eye on unfold in an artistic array of pixels designed to reflect insights and trends on major corporations (Apple, Walgreens, Target, etc.) and the industries that reflect them: technology, engineering and finance, for starters. Part of a new information apps system that fills in the gaps from other data systems, this interface (which also offers heat maps for users to track their own stocks) may very well change the way we work. Apple’s App Store says StockTouch has 9 sectors for 4,000 companies and thousands more news stories; we’re not doubting you on this one, analysts. With data that automatically updates every five minutes, there’s no way you can go wrong here.

Netbot – $4.99 – iPhone & iPad App

Though the Kickstarter-christened and paywalled Twitter alternative App.net has already garnered a whopping 35 third-party mobile apps in it’s four short months of released alpha, Netbot is jockeying to be at the top of the heap. Of all the competition, it boasts the strongest pedigree — developer Tapbots created the smart logic behind the critically beloved Tweetbot among other smartphone-optimizing hack apps. Second, the features are commendable, including but not limited to customizable tabbing for easy stream management, baked-in support for apps including Instapaper, and a handy mute feature that allows users to block messagers from other users without unfollowing. Though it costs nearly double compared to its Twitter-oriented cousin, odds are that a few extra dollars are worth the app’s high-end feel and sleek looks.

Youtube for iOS – FREE – iPhone App

Do you still have upgrader’s remorse? Whether you got your hands on a shiny new iPhone 5 or accidentally authorized an install, the starkly Google-less iOS 6 has been something of a bitter pill to swallow for Apple customers. Thankfully, Google has re-entered with Youtube, a fully functional and free app that not only allows users to access Youtube’s nearly limitless stash of videos but also has connections for social sharing and a smarter commenting system. Just don’t expect a clone of the original app — the reincarnated Youtube is much more focused on the community, not an extension of Apple’s suite.

Cambox – $0.99 – iPhone App

Fervent shutterbugs, rejoice: now there’s an app that can allow you to take (nearly) unlimited photos of your scenery, daily meals or your dog in a tiny hat. Just shell out a buck for Cambox, a third party camera-app optimized for the iPhone 5, connect to your Dropbox account and snap away. The app’s direct porting to the cloud means that you won’t clog up your phone with the millionth picture of your baby almost rolling over or countless nights you play photographer after one too many beers.

Tweetglass – $0.99 – iPhone App

You can barely buy a black coffee for a dollar anymore – actually, if you can, let us know – but you can buy this app. iPad lovers, embrace Tweetglass: the newest app that’s kicked Twitter’s (for iPad) to the curb. Keep your conversations up to real-time speed and fill timeline gaps that apps like Hootsuite can create with replies that are actually included in your Twitter feed. Users can also see retweets for posts that have been reblogged and tweets with images included. With a crisp interface similar to Echofon, another Twitter app, and an ease of use we liken to Facebook’s drop-down comment feature, you can’t go wrong here.
