Delivery estimates for Apple’s first foldable, the $1,999 iPhone Duo, moved to January minutes after preorders opened on 16 October, across every colour and storage option. Store pickup stock for launch day also ran out. The phone goes on sale on 23 October.

Shipping estimates for Apple’s first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, slipped into January within minutes of preorders opening on Friday, Bloomberg reported. The $1,999 phone goes on sale on 23 October.

The later dates applied to both colours and every storage option, from 256GB to 2TB. Apple’s US store showed a delivery date of 25 January for all models about half an hour after orders opened, WiFi Planet reported.

Apple’s retail stores also ran out of launch-day stock almost as soon as preorders began at 8am in New York, according to Bloomberg. Some buyers said on social media that their delivery dates still slipped, even though they had picked their model in advance as Apple suggested.

Apple did not say how many units it had to sell. However, it usually keeps some phones for walk-in shoppers on launch day.

The fully loaded 2TB model costs $3,199, according to AppleInsider. Apple’s shares rose 1.8% before US markets opened on Friday.

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo in September. It opens from a 5.4-inch outer screen into a 7.6-inch inner display.

The phone is one of the first big launches under John Ternus, who became chief executive on 1 September. Since then, Ternus has been cutting managers to ship products faster.

Counterpoint Research expects Apple to sell about 6 million iPhone Duos this year. Foldables have so far been a niche part of the smartphone market.
