At its CES press conference today, Intel announced a partnership with ESPN to embed its tiny Curie computer in athletes’ gear at the annual X Games sports competition to track real-time performance. This includes statistics like in-air rotations, jump height, jump distance, speed and force on landing.
On stage, Intel demonstrated this technology with BMX bikers, measuring their speed and jump heights. The Intel-fueled X Games will begin on January 28 in Aspen; viewers will be able to see athletes’ real-time statistics on TV as they watch the games on ESPN.
Intel first unveiled Curie at CES 2015, a button-sized wearable computer designed to turn anything into a smart wearable item. The device runs on low power Bluetooth technology and can be used with a watch battery or a rechargeable source.
Intel says Curie will ship this year at a price below $10.
