How is your ISP’s streaming performance? Netflix knows.

Today Netflix released data on the average rate of delivery, measuring both American and Canadian ISP speeds while streaming video from its service.

Believe it or not, it seems that a Canadian ISP came out on top. Based on the data seen below within the charts, Rogers, a major Canadian ISP comes in first, offering a 3,020Kbps throughput (average successful data rate) while streaming. Charter, the US ISP follows Rogers with a 2,667 kilobytes per second average.

Netflix metrics measures time-weighted bitrates and filters out mobile networks. It solely captures the ISP data on devices capable of playing HD streams. Depending on the region and network technology such as DSL and cable, it will affect the results, Netflix mentioned on its corporate blog.

The giant media provider Netflix promises it will continue to update the data monthly to bring some transparency to which ISPs are giving users the best quality streaming.

Canadian ISPs, in particular the major ISP’s such as Bell, Rogers and Shaw have been criticized in the past for throttling network traffic on VOIP services such as Skype however, the proof is in the pudding. Rogers customers seem to be achieving better performance rates than Americans.

This is great news for Canadians however it doesn’t solve the biggest issue with Netflix in Canada — the lack of content. Unfortunately, users in the Great White North have a lot less to choose from which is the biggest drawback in Canada.

Netflix streaming performance ends up being an interesting way to measure sustained throughput available from a given ISP over time, and therefore the quality of Netflix streaming that ISP is providing to our subscribers.
