Google releases Watch Face API for Android Wear with a ton of new designs in tow

Google releases Watch Face API for Android Wear with a ton of new designs in tow

Android Wear watch faces range from great to terrible, but users generally have to rely on the limited options provided by manufacturers. Google is now unveiling the Watch Face API, along with a new design guide, to allow developers to easily create their own.

There had been a few options on the Play Store before, but those were created by resourceful developers through unofficial means – Google says it will start removing these from the play store after January if they don’t upgrade to the new official API.

Developers can now also submit their apps to be designated as Android Wear apps to make it easier for Wear users to discover them.

Along with the API announcement, it’s releasing a ton of new watch faces onto the Google Play Store. Additionally, an update to the Android Wear and its respective app will arrive over the next week to let you download and change watch faces easily right from your phone.

Given that uniqueness is so important to donning a watch, the slew of new designs (and the many more now surely to come) is certainly appreciated.
